One stop shop for fun and games

It's a common story, you're not on a school team anymore, didn't aspire to (or make!) the big league, but you want to get out, have fun, meet people and stay active playing the games you love.

It's hard to find a place for adult recreation that keeps the focus fun and is well matched to your skill level. Urban Rec aims to do exactly that. Their mission is to provide the best recreation experience for all their members.

Joining an Urban Rec league saves the hassle of managing an adult beer-league roster, fussing with facility rentals and administrating the team. Membership has its benefits, and with Urban Rec, one of those benefits is that your job is simply to play.

Urban Rec, formally the Vancouver Sport and Social club, has one goal. That goal is to provide the best possible experience for their members. The focus is on being active, being social and most of all, having fun.

Sing up as a team, or sign up as an individual and find a team to join. Sports include: indoor volleyball, outdoor soccer, flag football, floor hockey, dodge ball, indoor soccer, basketball, curling, hockey and beach volleyball. Adults of all ages are welcome, and activities take place all over the city. Weather you're looking to get on the ice or in the sand, the opportunity is there to try anything. League teams are available in each skill level: recreational, intermediate and competitive.

All reviews point to a great sporting experience, but that isn't all you can expect from Urban Rec. They take the fun part seriously both on and off the field. Theme parties, hockey games, ski trips, wine tasting and dinner clubs are some of the other events participants enjoy. As the camaraderie builds among teammates, many go on to socialize in outside circumstances, network professionally, and contribute to the community as a group. Recently Urban Rec members participated in a charity ice skating event. Urban Rec members also enjoy preferred discounts at a number of Vancouver's hottest fitness facility, restaurants and retailers.

On average, Canadians spend 1.7 hours per day engaged in social leisure time, and only one half hour engaged in physical leisure time. This study evaluated how Canadians spend their leisure time, and goes on to compare activity levels by age and gender. The need for physical activity is clear, and we are familiar with the tremendous benefits associated with an active lifestyle, and conversely, the risks associated with inactivity. Recreational sports leagues that focus on fun, and emphasize the social components meet both the desire to spend time socially, and be physical.

What recreational sports leagues do you recommend in the Vancouver area? Share your thoughts in the comments, and let's keep learning new things, meeting new people and sharing our passion for a healthy Vancouver lifestyle.
