The Great One lights the torch at Vancouver 2010 Winter Games
Rumors were rampant in the days leading up to this historical opening ceremony. Everybody was wondering who would be the final torchbearer. Some speculated that a hologram of Terry Fox, together with his Mother, Betty Fox would light the caldron. Nancy Green and Rick Hansen and Gaetan Boucher were also favorites in the rumor mill.
Finally, on Friday night, it all came together. This long awaited celebration was a success and the final torchbearer: Wayne Gretzky. Despite the glitches, the choice didn’t spark any controversy. Canadians seem to approve of number 99, our final representation. While not a native Vancouverite, Wayne Gretzky is synonymous with Canadian hockey greatness. This Canadian hero dubbed “The Great One” comments on the significant event, "Obviously, it was one of the great days of my life not only for me but my entire family, starting today with my dad getting the chance to run with the torch"
According to CBC's Scott Russell, "We are a land of ice and snow and our greatest ambassadors have been those who have worn the Maple Leaf with great distinction at the Olympic Games." Wayne Gretzky is known globally and has worn that red maple leaf to represent Canada internationally.
His hockey excellence brought him fame and certainly earned him a place as torchbearer. Regarded as the best player in NHL history, Gretzky shattered records and brought the cup home to Edmonton four times. These are the things that come to mind when we think of The Great One and his contribution to Canadian sports.
Wayne isn’t just honored for his incredible play in Canada’s game, but for the values he represents and the way he gives back. Here are some of Wayne Gretzky’s off ice contributions:
Founded in 2002, the Wayne Gretzky Foundation provides underprivileged children and youth the opportunity to play hockey. Partial proceed for No.99 winery sales along with a fantasy camp and annual golf tournament all fund equipment and ice time for those who might not otherwise have the chance to play.
Wayne contributed fantasy camp proceeds to the tsunami relief effort.
Supporting pediatric kidney research, Wayne contributes to the Casey Lee Ball Foundation and acts as a celebrity guest at their golf tournament. 100% of funds raised go directly to pediatric kidney research.
Protecting 4 million people worldwide, the MedicAlert Foundation relies on charitable contributions to keep saving lives. This 24 hour emergency response service is another one of Gretzky’s favored charitable organizations.
Gretzky supports Oxfam in finding lasting solutions to poverty, hunger and social injustice worldwide. Gretzky works with Oxfam America who is one of 100 groups working locally toward an international goal.
Wayne’s contributions aren’t limited to these, he’s constantly reaching out to those in need. If you’re looking to be an on-ice hero, study his moves, if you’re looking to be an off-ice hero, he’s an example there too. Wayne Gretzky possesses the traits that make us proud to identify with him as a Canadian. A great choice for the 2010 Winter Games final torchbearer!
